Living at UNC Asheville

To become more aware of the people living in the United States and their culture, do not hesitate to ask questions about customs, practices and values. In the United States, people respect inquisitiveness.  Asking for assistance or information is not considered a sign of weakness rather it is a sign of interest and respect.

North Carolina

UNC Asheville is a part of the University system of the State of North Carolina, in the southeastern region of the United States. Individual states in the United States of America have their own distinctive character.  It might be helpful to read about the history of the state. Asheville is in the western part of North Carolina.  The culture in this part of the state is mixed. There is a strong Native American (Indian) culture and the Cherokee Indian Reservation is nearby.  The Appalachian mountain culture is rather distinctive. The early settlers in this area prided themselves on their courage, strength, endurance and their religious faith.

Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina, with approximately 87,236 city residents and more than 247,912 in Buncombe County.  The climate is moderate and the scenery is wonderful!

Health Insurance and Immunization

All International Students are required to carry health insurance. Proof of coverage is required to register and to remain enrolled each semester.

U.S. Government regulations require all international students to have sufficient insurance coverage while studying in the U.S.  Students may purchase the UNC Asheville student health insurance (billed at $802 per semester as of 2014-15 AY) or submit proof of their own non-UNC Asheville insurance that satisfies the U.S. Department of State's requirements outlined below:

  • Medical Benefits $100,000
  • Repatriation of Remains $25,000
  • Medical Evacuation $50,000
  • Deductible per Accident or Illness: $500 or less

This information is subject to change

Insurance policies need to state clearly that the student is covered while they are in the U.S.A. and the dates the policy covers need to be clearly stated.  A copy of this plan, or a letter from the Insurance agency clearly stating the necessary information, needs to be brought to the International Student Advisor's Office.

All students entering college in the State of North Carolina are required to be properly immunized.  You must verify that you have had the required immunizations or your registration will be canceled.
