A Note from MHW: University Budget Update

Update about University Budget
In her last update to students and families, Chancellor van Noort noted the University’s ongoing work to establish a clear picture of our financial situation and the pathway forward. Today, I wanted to share several updates and announce a few listening session dates specifically for students. I also wanted to answer some of the frequent questions that I have heard.

Over the last week, the Chancellor has met with academic deans, the Faculty Senate, the Staff Council, and the SGA president. This week she will begin a series of focused conversations with academic departments and campus-wide listening sessions.

Student Impact
I have spent time over the last week connecting with students and families concerned about the impact on the student experience, specifically their academic programs. Students should not worry about being able to complete their academic program. Students will be fully supported through their graduation here at UNC Asheville.

We want to be sure to get students and families as much information as possible so that they can be assured that their UNC Asheville experience will remain stable. Any decisions we make about budget and University spending will be based on our steadfast commitment to being student-centered and providing a transformational and impactful educational experience.

Decisions have not been made about academic program curtailment. If decisions are made to curtail academic programs, then that process will likely take some time. Accordingly, if decisions were made about certain programs, then all students within those programs would be supported through the completion of their degree.

Students who have questions or concerns and who are unsure about whom to reach out to are welcome to use any of the means outlined below that are most convenient to them.

The Chancellor has developed a webpage to provide ongoing, updated information about the University’s budget. Please, feel free to review the webpage here.

Submit a Question
I know the budget deficit has created a number of swirling questions and concerns, and we want to be able to provide quick and accurate answers to students. Here are a few ways you are welcome to submit questions, and we will work to get you answers:

Student Listening Sessions
You can also come share your concerns in person and get your questions answered at our Student Listening Sessions. Consider attending one of these upcoming sessions:

  • Wednesday, February 21 at 9 a.m. in Governors Hall 274

  • Wednesday, February 21 at 12 p.m. in Governors Hall 274

  • Thursday, February 22 at 5 p.m. in Highsmith 229

  • Friday, February 23 at 1 p.m. in Governors Hall 274

Parent & Family Listening Session
Parents and families may also have questions and are invited to attend a Zoom listening session on Wednesday, February 28 at 6 p.m. If your parent or family member is unable to attend, they can reach out via email at vcsa@unca.edu or by phone at (828)-251-6474, and I will be happy to get any questions or concerns answered.  Register here for the listening session and receive a Zoom link via email
